Google’s need for speed

             ('DiggThis)      SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Google has been spearheading many aspects of Internet Revolution apart from Search Engines.  We have talked in depth about Google’s ideology but we now move to specifics.  The notable areas where Google has lead other are:

  1. Search Engine technology
  2. Search Engine Marketing (revenue gerneration for itself and millions of other website – adwords, adsense)
  3. Popularising Videos – youtube, google maps
  4. Popularising maps
  5. Supports open source development (Has created lots of jobs !! )
  6. Online documentation (docs)
  7. Operationg system – Andriod, chrome
  8. Browsers – chrome
  9. Analytics/Alerts/Trends
  10. Base/Gapps – Ecommerce
  11. Images and its search – Picassa
  12. Local business promotion
  13. Blogging – blogger

Now quality and quantity of data transfer has been increasing at much higher rate than a couple of years back. High defination videos, much larger images and huge amount of data in terms of multimedia content are being shared over the internet. Google had always kept speed as one of its primary parameters from the begining, in its search operations as well. It always calculated the time taken to return your query and displays that beneath the search box. I dont remember when I first noticed it or when Google started that but they have been doing that for years.

Now after Google declared that they are using site speed in search engine ranking (April – 2010 Google declared through their official blog) it was quite clear that Google is now forcing or bribing webmasters to ramp up their speed :) Well it is always better for the end user if we gets what he/she seeks as soon as possible. It would reduce the internal cost of the website and would have better retention of visitors (bounce rate improves) due to better speed. Google has called a “need for speed” in all aspects of internet and web.

Google has also started offline operations to provide users with high internet connectivity and would start its pilot survey in sometime.

The impact of speed on SERP is not high, however it is something whose weightage is sure to increase.

A higher speed would also improve the usability of many of Google’s Applications – namely Videos (youtube), maps etc.

Some General Tips for increasing speed:

  • Images, videos, scripts, hosting are the reason website’s speed are affected (On a broader Level).
  • Reduce the images size by using better formats. [Quality of image would not be affected]
  • Opt for those format which are light weight (less disk space)
  • Check if you actually need those scripts, can you manage with HTML and CSS.
  • Get a good hosting account, that responds in a better manner.
